Obituary of Allen Harmon

Allen Charles Harmon, Sr. was born on December 9, 1918 to Benjamin Allen and Ida Rosetta Harmon in Atlantic City. He died March 2, 2007 in the presence of his family in Rochester, NY. Mr. Harmon graduated from Atlantic City High Vocational School and was trained as an electrician. On September 13, 1942, Allen married Thelma Stone and they moved to Philadelphia where he worked for the naval yard for a short time before he enlisted in the Navy during WWII. On completion of his military service Mr. Harmon returned to Atlantic City where he worked in construction participating in the building of many South Jersey structures including the Garden State Parkway. He was a long time member of Jethro United Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was a choir soloist and also sang for many church choirs throughout the Atlantic City area. He was a church Elder until he moved to the Rochester, NY area in 2000. He was also an avid bowler and bowled for many leagues throughout the years at the Verona Lanes in West Atlantic City and the Boardwalk Bowl in Atlantic City. After moving his family to Pleasantville in 1957, Mr. Harmon became a heavy equipment operator for, the FAA Technical Center (formerly NAFEC) in Pomona, were he was employed until he retired in 1980. Allen and Thelma spent their retirement years in Pleasantville until 2000 when they moved to The Village at Park Ridge in Rochester, NY where Allen played pinochle and joined the chorus. In 2005, Mr. Harmon moved to the Monroe Community Nursing home in Rochester where he lived out his final days. Although Mr. Harmon suffered a debilitating illness for many years, his faith in Jesus Christ provided the strength to be the husband, father, grandfather and friend that was respected by all. Mr. Harmon leaves cherished memories with his wife of 64 years, Thelma; children, Allen Jr. (Sandra) of Clinton, MD, Michael Harmon I and Stephanie G. Akil of Dover, DE, Gail (Alton) Chitty and Cynthia (Richard) Robinson of Rochester, NY, and Dr. Carolyn Harmon of Haledon, NJ; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; many other relatives. Interment, Riverside Cemetery.
