Melvin William Garland Sr. was born in Rochester, New York on May 7, 1932 to the late John Garland and Salina (Savage) Bacon.
He departed this life on April 10, 2020.
Melvin is predeceased by his parents John Garland, and Salina (Savage) Bacon, his stepfather Arthur Bacon, his brother William Cage, his loving son Marvin Arthur Garland, step son Lawrence Jackson, and two wives Edna Lois (Fullen) Garland, and Loretta E. (Brown) Garland.
Melvin Garland attended Edison Tech high school is a United States Army veteran. He was a paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Once Melvin left the army in his free time, he enjoyed sky diving, swimming, scuba diving, judo, photography, and also had a love for music and playing different instruments. In his spare time, he joined the Rochester Road Knights Motorcycle Club. Melvin retired from CP Ward Construction Co. after working 36 years from 1958 to 1994 at the age of 62.
Melvin leaves behind two sons Darnell (Gail) Garland, Melvin William Garland Jr, one daughter Donna Boyd, and daughter in law Paula Garland. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren Donna L. Grayson, Tiffany Brown, Danielle Oyphanith, Dara Garland, Darnell M. Garland, Marques Garland, Marshea Garland, Marla Garland and Timothy Garland along with seven great grandchildren. He also leaves behind three step-children Guy Jackson, Debbie Boyd, Darryl Boyd and a host of other family and friends.
