Our Father – Our Hero

George Washington Williams Jr. is a native of Harlem, New York. He was born on September 11, 1937, to Anna Williams and George Washington Sr. George was raised by Ginnie Moore, who he loved dearly and called “Mama Ginnie.”

During his elementary and high school years, George attended catholic school in Manhattan, NY. As a young boy, at the age of ten, George to a liking to the sport of boxing after his father took him to the world famous Madison Square Garden to see a professional boxing match. This motivated him to take boxing lessons. George’s love for boxing continued throughout his adulthood, where he became known as the infamous “Sugar George.” During the mid to late 1950’s, George served in the United States Armed Forces as a Marine. He continued to box while in the Marines. This opportunity acquired him several boxing medals, trophies, certificates and the esteem title of “Golden Glove Champion.” He then went on to fight professionally. While in the Marines, George became pen pals with Shirley Lucas, who later became his wife and the love of his life. They were married on Shirley’s birthday on September 29, 1959 and from that union of love, their four beautiful daughters were born; Lois, Patricia, Karen and Shirley Jr. (Sherry).

George achieved numerous accomplishments throughout his life. His most esteem accomplishments include, earning his B.A. in Urban Politics from Shaw University, an M.A. in Education from Brooklyn College and his L.L.B. from Blackstone Law School. George also achieved numerous outstanding accomplishments throughout his career, which included teaching at several colleges and universities. He worked as a professor at Medgar Evers College, Columbia University and New York University (NYU). George was an accomplished publisher, author and poet. His writing credentials include a membership in African Poetry Theatre and the American Black Writers Association. Mr. Williams’ poems have been published in anthologies throughout the United States and Canada. His book, “Short Stories Inspired by Poe,” has been very well received. His book can be found showcased in the Edgar Allen Poe Museum. Mr. Williams was also well known and respected in the political arena in NYC for his involvement and work with the former Mayor John Lindsay and the 1st African American Congresswoman and Presidential candidate, Shirley Chisholm.

George is predeceased by his parents Anna Williams and George Washington; his daughter Karen (Christopher) Gadson and grandson Michael Williams.

He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Shirley A. Lucas, daughters; Lois (David Falon), Patricia (Kenneth McGahee) and Shirley Jr. His grandchildren; Kenneth III, David Jr., Casey, Christopher Jr., Marcus, Kyante’, Destinee, Kenyan and Diondre’; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. George Washington Williams Jr. will be greatly missed, always loved and in our hearts forever.
