Obituary of Mose Batiste

Mose Jr. ("Babe") was born in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana on December 24, 1933. He was the third child of ten born to Mose Sr. and Julia Batiste. He confessed to Christ at an early age and joined Mohorn Baptist Church in Plaisance, Louisiana. Mose worked on the family farm where he grew sweet potatoes, picked pecans, cut sugar cane and ran errands to the country store for neighbors and relatives. He was given a little red wagon for a birthday/Christmas present. Sometimes he would pull grown-ups in the wagon in exchange for a large piece of sweet bread. Mose played basketball in his senior year of high school and graduated from Plaisance High School in 1951. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1952 and did his tour of duty stateside. Mose moved to Rochester, NY in 1954. He worked for Columbia Banking from 1966 until it closed in 1994. He worked as a stockroom clerk and courier between branches. Mose loved people! In Rochester he became a great Red Wing and Yankee fan. When his youngest daughter was 10, he passed on his passion for the Yankees to her. They spent many summers in front of the television, cheering on their Yankees. His daugher will forever charish those memories. He loved to travel and had many friends in North Carolina and Massachusetts. He enjoyed attending the Joseph Family Reunion and visiting with his relatives from Louisiana, California and Texas. His favorite past-times were league bowling and tending to his garden at home. Mose departed this life on February 22, 2007. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 45 years (Elouise of Rochester), three daughters Julianne of Las Vegas, Michele and Janice of Rochester, one grand-daughter Janelle of Rochester; his brothers Will (Shirley) of Rochester, Daniel (Rachel) and Glenn of Opelousas; two sisters Wynier Jean (Ralph) of New Orleans and Julia Ann of Dallas; a sister-in-law Lizzie of Rochester, along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death are his parents, three brothers (Wyman, Richard, Donald) and one sister (Shirley Mae Guillory). Mose was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend. To know him is to love him and he will surely be missed.
