Obituary of Mattie Lue Bennett
Please share a memory of Mattie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On June 19, 1917 Isiah and Essie Macon were blessed with a bouncing baby girl whom they named Mattie Lue. Her siblings Isiah, Gatson, Lawrence, William, and Vera were graciously awaiting the arrival of their baby sister, whom they showered with love. Her early education and childhood years were in Holly Hill, South Carolina.
She met the love of her life, Wesley Bennett, and the two were married. From that union, a baby girl, Mary Lee, was born. She enjoyed designing and sewing the prettiest dresses for her daughter.
Mattie Lue migrated to Rochester, New York after the birth of her first grandson to embrace her most cherished role as "Grandma". In addition to caring for her grandchildren, she was employed at Nazareth College in Nutrition Services.
Grandma was a devoted member of Goodwill Baptist Church. She took pride in washing and ironing the Communion table cloths until her health failed.
She loved to cook, sew, quilt, babysit, and watch wrestling. She would clap, shout and bounce up and down as she cheered on her favorite wrestlers to the delight of anybody watching. She enjoyed the many summer trips to South Carolina in the station wagon with her daughter and grandchildren. Grandma brought joy and stability to her family. You could always count on Grandma to be there when you needed her. She loved taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and did not want anyone of them to seek outside childcare.
Predeceased by her husband, Wesley Bennett; her daughter, Mary Lee Dennis; a grandson, George Dennis, and her siblings, she went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2016, at age 98. She will be forever cherished by: her grandchildren: Willis Dennis, Matthew Dennis, Brenda Bennett, Christopher Bowick and Theresa Lou Bowick; 14 great grandchildren: Germaine Cross, Keyonia (Shateka) Dennis, Aishia (Cole) Norris, Chauncy Leslie, Natasha Dennis, Dontae Dennis, Phillip Thomas, Jeanetta Stanback, Jacynta Harris, Ashlee Bowick, Shakela Dennis, Kanesia Tillman, Ashley Tillman, and Amir Dennis; 35 great-great grandchildren; her nieces: Mattie Lue Frederich, Vera Mae Grate, Veronica Henderson, Joyce Sanders, Sarah Gause, Louvina Long, Henrietta Reaves, and Loreen Griffett; her nephews: James 'May' Teaste, and John 'Tina' Bennett; her dear cousins: Sarah Gause and Paul Brown; her friend, Daphne Anderson, and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.
Interment, Falls Cemetery.
