I worked with Bert at ABC Head Start. She would always say "Ms. Pitts are you behaving yourself today?" I would reply "of course not". She would say "come here you need a hug hu?" She would always make me laugh and would know the right thing to say if I was having a rough day. I'm especially going to miss seeing her with that dang orange purse. I love you Bert.

I had the pleasure of working with Bert through ABC Head Start. She had recently taken one of my students under her wing and had even gone on a home visit with me to his house. She was able to reach this child's mother in a way I had never been able to do. That was truly her gift, connecting with people on a level that others of us attempt our whole lives.
The last time I saw Bert was a few days before she passed. She showed up at my classroom door early in the morning with that same child in tow. She said he had been on her mind so she had gone to his house to get some paperwork that we had been trying to get from his mother for weeks. Bert just took matters into her own hands and did it. She was just that kind of person.
The following day, the Friday before she passed, Bert called me at school with an urgency in her voice. She told me she had again been thinking about that little boy in my room and gave me some strategies she wanted me to try with him in the classroom. She said she would follow up to see how things were going.
Just a few days later I heard the shocking news that she had passed. I know she is in a better place, but she was an angel here on earth to so many. She will be truly missed.

Bert and I worked together at Children's Institute, developing the Safe Start initiative to respond to young children exposed to violence. The love that she brought to everyone--children, teachers, fellow staff members, funders--helped us as we worked on this difficult issue. And that love was undergirded by an unshakeable faith that she shared joyously. My thoughts are with her family.

She was a very good friend loving mother her kids were always first. I met Bert on the transportation Co. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church many years ago. We drove many years together and we had a family like committee we look out for each other and if we had to cover for each other to drive we did no problem. She left and went and join her brother church and she was missed on the driving schedule. She was a very good friend to me and when we ran into each other we had laughs and laughs. To the family she still there with you, and she will always be watching over you. God Bless you all she left nothing but good memories keep them and stay with God that is what she would want.

Bertha T. Farrell Family,
In times like these Ade, we are assured of the love God has for all His children. Yes, we run this race of life knowing that, someday, we will all be called home. For we have an eternal home, not made with the hands of man. Be well assured that God has made his choice in bringing His own close to Him. Remember family, Sister Farrell is just away. She has gone on to claim her eternal reward. For we too believe that there is laid up for us, a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give us, at that day. Yes, we must all fight the good fight; we must finish our course and keep the faith. Continue family, to look unto the hills from whence cometh your help.
Faithfully submitted with love, Pastor Terance W. Cooley, the Cooley family & the Second Baptist Church of Marshalltown Family

Bert was the most beautiful soul I've ever met. You could not have met Bert and not deeply loved her. When I first met Bert I made an off hand comment and she stopped, looked at me and said, "your crazy...I like you," in that wonderful voice of hers. My life is better for having met her. She was always this great presence that made me happy for just being there. I have memories of laughter, support that I will always treasure.

Bert, I'm sitting here at work looking at your picture in the paper amazed to see your face. My flesh says, "No"... but my heart says, "He Knows". The Scripture that comes to me is in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, that says, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a Crown of Righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. I will miss you! Your wit, your wisdom your laughter, your boldness, your selflessness and especially your smile. Thank you for your contribution to me, Von and Aaron. You were not only my babysitter, but my friend!

Dear In Christ Family, and friends of our Sister Bert, The Father God understands the sorrow of separation. Jesus our Lord was intimately acquainted with the anguish that comes from having to face the trial of separation. He walked it out by knowing that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." That's the transcendent joy of resurrection; life eternal at the right hand of the Father God. And for us, who are in Christ Jesus, unspeakable joy for those who walk into an eternity shaped by His Glory.

Bert just had such a magnetic personality and a contagious smile. She loved her girls and she loved her husband. God allowed her to feel the physical manifestation of His love on this earth through her family, so it was easy for her to share His love with everyone she came in contact with. She will be greatly missed but her impact will live on!

Bert was one of my FAVORITE people. My son & I so loved her. RaShawn attended her Daycare where he received plenty of LOVE, CARE, and KNOWLEDGE. She potty trained him, took him off the bottle and pacifier and he took his first steps while with her. She was a blessing to us. I couldn't had a better person taking care of my child than Bert. She was so kind and loving. I'm thankful that I had a chance to see her last week and RaShawn was able to talk to her on the phone while I was with her. Bert touched the lives of many and will be missed dearly. She will not be here physically but her spirit and love will always be in our hearts.
