Obituary of Dr. John Gauson Lewis

Went to be with the Lord, March 1, 2017. He was born December 24, 1936. Predeceased by his father, Bishop Lewis W. Stewart, Sr. , his mother Carrie, his sister Dorothy and his brother Rev. David Stewart. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years Pantila; children Juel Gauson, Elder James Gauson and John Gauson, a brother Rev. Lewis W. Stewart and sister Haki Thompson; two grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins and other relatives.
Bishop Stewart was born in New York city and raised in Newburgh, N.Y. where he attended high school and was an All Star Basketball player. He played drums in the city's drum corps and competed in the Golden Gloves. He was a virtuoso with the guitar. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 where he served on an aircraft carrier.
He relocated to Denver, Colorado where he graduated from college and pastored a church and was ordained a Bishop in the Church of God In Christ, Int.
He moved to Rochester in 1973 and organized and pastored Christian Community Church, Inc. where he ministered for over 40 years . He was active in many civil rights activities and was a member of CAAU and UCLM.
His family will receive friends Thursday, March 9 from 5:30 - 7:30PM at the Funeral Home, 2793 Culver Rd., Rochester. Home Going Celebration Friday, March 10, 11AM Pentecostal Miracle Deliverance Church, 923 Portland Ave. Entombment, Riverside Cemetery.
