Obituary of Geneva Carter
Please share a memory of Geneva to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mother Geneva Williams Carter peacefully departed this life on August 13, 2023. She was surrounded by family at her side at the Cottingham Hospice House located in Seneca, SC.
Mother Geneva was the last living child of the late Charlie and Mary Smith Williams of Delco, North Carolina. She was educated in the Columbus County Schools and just like her mother, followed her passion for helping people into the field of nursing.
Raised mostly in North Carolina, Geneva relocated to Virginia for a short period of time before finally moving to New York City, where she met the love of her life, her late husband of nearly 45 years, Marion Carter Sr. Eventually, Marion and Geneva settled in Rochester, NY, and to this union were born four children: Marion Jr, Aaron, Vanessa, and Deron. Geneva was a devoted and caring wife and mother, and had a special love for her family and friends. She was known for her friendly, chatty personality. She never knew a stranger - she would share pictures and stories with the doctor, the mail carrier, or the tax collector!
Geneva retired from Rochester General Hospital as a nurse where she served faithfully for over 20 years. She also served the Lord faithfully, and loved singing hymns. While in Rochester, she attended New Holy Light Church.
In her free time, she loved supporting her favorite football teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills, and her favorite hobbies included enjoying her son-in-law's cooking and spoiling her only grand-daughter Shanelle, whom she affectionately called "Sweetcake." But what she really loved was watching The Andy Griffith Show! Her favorite character of all time was Barney Fife. It was not uncommon to find her watching - and quoting - his lines every night, laughing hysterically at each and every show like she was watching it for the first time…even though she knew every episode by heart.
In July of 2021 Mother Geneva relocated to Seneca, SC and attended St. Paul Baptist Church until her health began to decline. She is survived by daughters Theresa (Tony) Lee of Bakersfield, California and Vanessa (Robert) Woods of Seneca, South Carolina, sons Aaron and Deron Carter of Rochester, NY, grand-daughter, Shanelle Woods of Manhattan, NY, and a host of nieces and nephews throughout upstate New York and the Carolinas. Also left to cherish her memories are devoted friends, Mary Cannon (Seneca, SC), Willie Baldon (Rochester, NY), Cheryl Franks (Grand Rapids, MI), and Lynette Tanner (Rochester, NY).
She was preceded in death by her husband Marion Carter, Sr., and by her son, Marion Carter, Jr. Also preceding her in death are her siblings: Mosetta Johnson, Christie Bell Johnson, Caroline Willians, Charlie Buddy Williams, and Golda Williams.
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
