Dorothy Mitchum was born May 18th, 1942 in Kingstree, South Carolina. She is the daughter of the late Robert & Elouise Mitchum. As a young girl, she joined St. Mark A.M.E Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord Savior. Dorothy attended St. Mark High School and graduated in 1963.
In 1964, Dorothy married Lewis Smith in Kingstree, South Carolina. They later moved to Rochester NY. Their marriage produced two sons; Norman J. Smith and Keefer L. Smith.
Dorothy worked at Xerox Corporation for twenty-three years before she retired. After she retired, she decided that she wanted to pursue another career. Dorothy started working at the Rochester City School District for another fifteen years. In 2018, she finally decided to retire and start enjoying her life.
Dorothy was a member on various church boards and committees. She was a dedicated mother to her children and devoted church member to her community. Dorothy was a woman of strength and strong convictions.
Dorothy enjoyed reaching out and talking to her family members. She also enjoyed traveling to see her family. Dorothy enjoyed the community in which she lived in at Woodridge Court.
Dorothy is survived by: her two sons, Norman (Kitty) Smith, Keefer (Matt) Fisher and three grandchildren; Marcus Smith (Rochester, NY) Jwan Smith (Huntersville, North Carolina) and Arianne Smith (Fairfax ,Virginia); One great grandson, Tommy Carter (Rochester, NY); one sister, Lillie Woodard (Rochester, NY); three sisters-in-law, Edna McCorkle (Greensboro, North Carolina),Thomasthena Smith (Rochester, NY) and Fannie Mitchum (Hemingway, South Carolina). Dorothy also leaves a host of nieces and nephews that she loved and adored.
Dorothy was preceed in death by: Robert & Elouise Mitchum (parents), Brothers: Samuel Mitchum, Joseph Mitchum, Robert Nae Mitchum, and Leroy (Beverly) Mitchum. Sisters: Annie Lee (Elijah) Briggs, Earline (Clearance) Dowdy, brothers-in-law: Jessie Woodard and Leroy (Mickey) Smith.
Dorothy had a host of extended family members that she loved dearly: The Smith Family (Rochester NY & Kingstree South Carolina) McCullough Family (Rochester NY & Kingstree South Carolina) and all of her church family members.
Dorothy had a lot of love and compassion for her close and dearest friends, Odester Nelson and Ms. Betty Jackson and special cousin Ella Prior.
Dorothy made an impact on many people’s lives while here on earth. Dorothy will truly be missed by all that had a presence in her life.
