Passed on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at age 96.
Mera Ferguson, affectionately known as Mother Vera, went home to Jesus on December 14, 2022, at age 96. Mera was born to Casilda McMillan and Septimus Ferguson on October 7, 1926, in Clarendon, Jamaica, the oldest of 8 children. She moved to St. Catherine after the birth of her first child and would go on to have a total of 5 daughters - Thelma, Olive, Fay, Jennifer, and Angela.
Mera migrated to the United States in 1982, living first in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Rochester, NY where she resided at the time of her passing.
She spent most of her working life doing domestic and home care work. She was above all else a nurturer and caregiver, to her immediate family and to those lucky enough to be loved by her. Her main goal was to always make sure everyone around her was happy.
Mera was also very involved in her church community and her faith was an integral part of who she was. She was baptized in the late 70s under the ministry of Bishop Allison. She faithfully attended Bethel Born Again Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic while living in Jamaica.
Not long after she migrated to the United States, she began attending a USA branch of the same church. There she stayed until she moved to Rochester. When her health prevented her from attending church in person, she enjoyed watching her favorite television pastors including Joel Osteen and Charles Stanley.
Mera was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ivy, Theresa, Linette, and Ines, and brothers Ira and Desmond. She is survived by her brother, Basil Davis, her 5 daughters, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and the highly anticipated arrival of another great-grandchild and 1 great-great-grandchild. As well as countless nieces and nephews, and friends who were like family.
