Obituary of Valerie Ann Scott

Please share a memory of Valerie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our mother, Valerie “Val” Scott was born in Rochester NY on February 20, 1944. She was the middle child of Erwin and Leona (Klehammer) Phelps. She grew up in Rochester. After graduating from West High school, she attended The Genesee Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to have a successful 20+ years career as a Registered Nurse at The Genesee Hospital in the Labor and Delivery Unit. She was instrumental in pioneering the emerging technology of electronic fetal monitoring. She was the first OB Nurse Educator and helped launch the Non-stress Test (NST) Lab at The Genesee Hospital. She was blessed to be present for the births of many of our cousins, nieces, and nephews. On March 15, 1969, she married our father, Fred Scott Jr. and was blessed with the two of us, Rebecca “Becky” and Michael. Our mother was also honored to include our father’s oldest son and our brother, Jerome “Freddy” Green as a part of our loving, blended family. Our mom was a strong-willed woman who loved her family…hard and strong! She would give her opinion without flinching or apology, but she never dismissed you for your choices and always welcomed you home when it did not work out. She may slide a little “I told you so” into the conversation but it was accompanied by unconditional love. She was the quintessential mama bear and would defend her husband, children, and family with the spirit of a warrior going into battle. She was a doting dog owner who spent much of her free time outside gardening when the weather and her health permitted. That strong will enabled her to fight, and even conquer many of the health challenges she faced over the years, allowing her to witness us raise families of our own, modeling the same love, care, and devotion that she and our father bestowed upon us. She was a proud grandmother, and all of her grandchildren loved their “Grammy”. Our mom spent the past 3 months in the hospital, and due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, visitation was not allowed. After months of not being able to see her in person, we were finally permitted an in-person visit. She was able to see us (Becky in person and Michael via video chat) and hear us tell her how much we loved and missed her. She was able to tell us the same. We placed a poster board full of family pictures in the room with her so that she would no longer be alone. The following day, God called her home to be our father’s side. We love you mom! You are forever in our hearts. Your children Becky, Michael, and Freddy Valerie was called home the in early hours of January 4, 2021. She was predeceased by her loving husband Fred Scott Jr and leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Rebecca “Becky” Scott of Rochester, Michael Scott of Durham NC and Jerome Green of Boston, MA; sister Barbara McMichael of Ulster Park, NY, sister Jerilyn Phelps of Rochester, NY, sisters-in-law Patricia Strong of Rochester, Rosa Mae Scott of League City, TX, Linda (Felder) Shaw of Kingstree, SC; Evonda (Jim) Ramos, Maethonia Scott, and Gladys Scott; 2 brothers-in-law Wilson (Jeannette) Scott and Kenneth (Betty) Scott of Kingstree, SC; 5 grandchildren Quincy, Reyna, and Michaela of Rochester, NY and Taj and Kylie of Durham, NC; along with other relatives and long time friends.
