Obituary of Raymond Dock Crumity

Dock entered this life on July 25, 1951 a gift to Lorene and Dock Crumity, he was the oldest of 5 siblings. During his infant and early childhood Dock spent time in Monticello, Florida, sitting on his grandfather, Willie Crumity’s knee and tugging on the apron of Aunt Author Lee Crumity effectually known as “Aunt Sweet Thing”. When he was about 6 years old he returned home to Rochester, NY to his parents Dock and Lorene Crumity. Dock was baptized at an early age at the Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church. Dock attended public school where he excelled in athletics and mechanics. After Madison High School Dock he pursued a career in Tool & Die which during that era was unionized and difficult to get hired. But Dock landed a job at Stromberg-Carlson in the late 1960’s. He had two brothers David and Jeremiah who early on also had interest in the Tool & Die trade. He loved cars and enjoyed his Thunderbird, he also purchased for his sister, a 1965 Powered Blue Ford Mustang Convertible top with mag wheels. Dock loved to read and his passion was Black and African History. He would spend hours in the library researching and much of his time he would share his wealth of knowledge about the Civil Rights Movement and the organization SNCC in particularly. The way Dock talked about Black and African History you would have thought that he was actually there himself. He also spent numerous amounts of time learning more Black History from his mentor, Dr. John S. Walker also known as Talik. Mid 1970’s Dock was on the move, he left Stromberg-Carlson and Rochester, NY to pursue other interest. After a few years away Dock returned to the area and lived in Niagara Falls where he obtained his Associates Degree in Business from SUNY Geneseo College. After school Dock returned to Rochester about 1985 and sought employment where he could mentor youth and get involve in Social/Civil Issues. He was employed part-time at the Montgomery Neighborhood Center where he worked evenings with youth in various activities especially sports. It was at this time when Dock became one of the founding members for the CAAU under the Leadership of the Reverend Lewis Stewart. Dock served in multiple roles: Mentor for Men, Self-Defense Instructor, Facilitator, and even one of Reverend Stewarts’ Security Team members. A few years later Dock was on the move again to the Pennsylvania area and later returned to Rochester in the early 1990’s where he worked for then Time Warner Cable (now Spectrum). Dock would travel often to NYC to visit his younger brother and sister-in-law but after his brother’s death Dock again was on the move. He moved to the South and lived mostly in various parts of Georgia where he has lived for more than 20 years. As life goes Dock encountered challenges and struggles with addiction, but Dock was a fighter who as Proverbs 24:16, "For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.” KJB. Dock believed and this was his ethos Luke 22:32, "But I have prayed for thee that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brother.” KJB Dock knew he was a leader of men and it was not how you started but how you finished. As witnesses shared when Dock got up he never looked back. He was clean on 10/18/15 and been involved in a lot of service work for Alcoholic Anonymous in these areas: Hospital and Institution Representative for the Action Group: Monday night meeting chairman for the past 4 years; General Service Representative for a group named Get Real; and was certified in Heating and Air Conditioning. In the words of Mrs. Beverly Young, “Dock helped a lot of people in the AA Program, especially the younger Black men that came in the program. He mentored several men and taught them about being active in the AA Program. He was my best friend and always someone that you could depend on to lend a helping hand. He is truly missed by all of us that had the opportunity to know him. He definitely left a legacy of Hope in AA for others to gleam from.” “He finished well.” Dock made his transition from this life on Thursday, May 21, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Dock Crumity, Mother, Lorene Crumity, Brother, Reverend David L. Crumity and his Brother, Michael (Shaun) Crumity. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, whom he talked about more than Black and African History and the joy of his heart, Khalliah Mack- Crumity.
