Obituary of Lula Henderson

Lula Mae Hankerson, was born July 25, 1926 the first child to the late James & Mable W. Hankerson of Sanford Florida. She departed this life on Friday, May 30, 2008 at the Hurlbut Nursing Home, Rochester, New York.
Lula attended primary school in Seminole County, where she married Malachi Curtis. They had one child, Jimmy who is deceased. About 1946 she moved to Buffalo N.Y, where she met and married the late McKinley Henderson and to this union was born two sons, the late Marshall James and David Leon Henderson.
Lula was employed at Millard and Fuller Memorial Hospital as a practical nurse. Lula later moved to Rochester NY where she worked at Monroe Community Hospital and Rochester Psychiatric Center. After retirement she worked as a home health aide for HCR.
Lula was a dedicated member of Peace Missionary Baptist church where she was a member of the Missionary Department and later became President. Lula was very active in the GLA Women's Department; President of the Pastor's Aide; Captain for the state of Florida in the Annual State Rally for the Church. Lula was president of the Great Lakes Missionary Assoc, Nursing Guild, and on the Board of Trustees. Lula loved to sing. She helped organize the Mission Choir which later became the PBC Senior Choir in which she was the Director. She was a member of the E.L.Long choir, and a member of the Star Gospel Singers.
Lula was a member of the International F & A.M. Masons and Order of the Eastern Star Frederick Douglass Grand District Lodge & Mary Magdalene Grand District Chapter #5. She was a loyal member of the Daughters of Jericho #214-A.
Lula was a tireless member of all these organization until illness. All through her life she enjoyed fishing with her family.
Lula Mae was predeceased by one great grandson, David A. Henderson, and one sister Gracie Mae Harris.
Lula leaves behind: one brother James Hankerson Jr of Deland, FL, one sister Hattie M. Hankerson of Sanford FL, one son David L. Henderson, one granddaughter Barbara J Henderson, one nephew Ivory B. Hankerson, Sr., very special niece Velma J. Harris, nieces Apryl and Agatha Hankerson, great nephews William D. Hankerson, Ivory B. Hankerson Jr., Joshua Hankerson, and special friends Linda J Bloem, Willie Mae Iglus and Alice Ashford along with many dear friends and her church family.
Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery.
