Obituary of Rev. Elie Granger
Bishop Elie Granger was born in Noxubee County,
Mississippi to George and Lizzie Granger on July 26,
1927. He left home at the age of 16 and joined the
Army.
Later he married and to that union had six children. He
later moved to Arkansas where he met and married
the late Mae Nella Granger and to that union four
children born. In 1964, Elie and Mae Nella moved to
Rochester, New York. He served in ministry under the
late Madam Watson.
While serving in ministry, Elie Granger became pastor
of Calvary Spiritual Church where he faithfully served
for over 50 years until he retired. He left his legacy to
Reverend Carl Nelson. Bishop Granger was a dedicated
leader and worked in the community with the United
Church Ministries and The Greater Universal Spiritual
Unity Union. He also loved quartet music or just gospel
music. He would bring different groups and choirs
to Rochester with the Late Mother Giles.
Bishop Granger is predeceased by his wife Reverend
Mae Nella Granger and son Alvin Nowden. He leaves
to cherish his memories: nine children: Joyce (Arthur)
Gordon, Arnetta (Edward) Moore, Londia G. Wright,
Shirleas (Benjamin) Washington, Elie Granger, Jr.,
Valerie (Clarence) Swilling, Clarietta Nowden, Diana
Floyd, and Reuben Granger; one beloved sister, Lizzie
Granger; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and
one great-great grandchild.
